The Story Behind the Apron

Six months after my daughter was born, I was doing the laundry and wondering where the morning had gone. I felt as though I had spent the first few months of my daughters life in survival mode, and was just now thinking about things more clearly.

I realized I needed three things:

A rag within reach at all times. Seriously- all times. Because motherhood is a lot of things, and messy is one of them.

A work uniform. When my work is my home, I was struggling to feel like I was at work. I needed something to put on in the morning that said: I'm here and I'm ready for the day.

And I needed to replace my apron.

In high school I bought a red paisley smock from the thrift store, hand made by someone I don't know. That apron carried me through high school, college, and postgrad. I wore it all the way out.

So I made a new one!

I sat down that day at my sewing machine with a pattern, an old sheet, and an idea. While the baby napped, I sewed up the first draft of the Lived Liturgy apron. After wearing it around a few days- I knew I was onto something.

The idea had been kicking around in me for a few years- that repeated rhythms hold life, friendship, faith, and home together. Liturgy means ordered worship- the daily work of home is exactly that. The same tasks, every day, done with love and intentionality. Routine that can be offered up to God with prayer.

Most moms have the routine down. What I wanted- what I think many moms are searching for- is the worship in the routine.

The apron is where I start. It's what I put on in the morning to tell my home, family, and God that I'm ready for whatever happens. Ready to give and receive.

I think this apron might do the same for you!
